Tar: Fate of the Artist

Tar is Todd Field’s movie. It was released in 2022. Lots of people expect this movie the last year. Todd Field began acting when he graduated from high school. He is studying acting in New York. Also, he is a jazz musician. Then he started working as a musician and actor in a theatre. He was an actor for a while and then he turned to direct. Tar, the last movie by the director, attracts great attention. The film stars Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tar, Nina Hoss as Sharon Goodnow, Sophia Kauer as Olga Metkina. Kate Blanchett won many best actress awards with this movie. Cate Blanchett is an Australian actriss. She has received numerous awards including the Academy Awards and British Academy Film Awards. There are other stars in the movie besides Blanchett. One of them is Nina Hoss who is acting in Phonix and Barbara, and the other one is Noemie Merlant from Portrait of the Lady on Fire. Cate Blanchett won the Best Actress award at the 79th Venice Film Festival, where the film premiered.

In the movie Lydia Tár, is considered one of the greatest living composers and the first female conductor of a large German orchestra. We can see her narsistic behaviar from the very beginning of the movie. She has a big prestige and she is super-rich. Also, she is married to her first violinist and they have a daughter. But there are some problems in her life. Tar is an obsessive personality. Tar runs a scholarship program and this scholarship program is rumored to be the source of young women who Tar has a relationship with. The movie focuses on the story of Lydia Tar, when she is in a turning point in her life, one of the her illicit relationships ends with disaster is coming out, and she lost almost everything in her life, her career was turned upside down by ignoring all her achievements. What is said about Schopenhauer's philosophy in the movie: "He measured human intelligence by its sensitivity to sound." One of the conversations in the movie started with this sentence, then: "Didn't he throw a woman who was suing him down the stairs?" Actually this scene gives us a clue about the rest of the movie. Tar is definitely a very successful personality but the source of this success is her ego.

You may think that everything that happens while watching the movie is too exaggerated. But I think the truth is actually it is a very familiar story. Tar can sometimes be a part of someone very close us or even a part of us. In the final Lydia losing everyting she had worked for years, finding herself in place where she would not be, and realizing that the most important think for her is music. What we watch an artist whose soul is with music. And she lost this soul with her passions and impulses. In this scene we watched her mourn and shed tears, remembaring what the masters whose ideas she valued said about music. The masters speech is “ Now you can understand the meaning of music. It is what it makes you feel when you hear it. Now we know the meaning of music. We don’t actually need to know sharps, flats, chords. You don’t need to these to understand music, if it says anything. The most wonderful think is, there is no limit to the different feelings that music can make you feel. Some of these feelings are so special and deep that they cannot be compared with words. We may not always be able to express our feelings. Sometimes music breathes from such a deep place that we cannot put it into words. That's what music is great for. It names our feelings with notes rather than words.”

In the first scenes of the movie, it is like the camera is peeking at Lydia, the camera shoots from the viewer’s point of view. The shooting techniques of the movie are also very successful. The preferred cameras are very successful for color science and skin rendition. These features provide warm skin tones and sharp blacks. With the color palate and these shooting techniques the movie has a great cinematography.

Overall, the movie is very high quality both in terms of subjects and shooting techniques. It is a movie that shows the artist far from perfection. In my opinion, the movie tells the truth by distorting it. And in the end, we can see the fate of every artist: back to the beginning and reunderstand the meaning of your art.
